The 2-plays Sequence That Led to Bo Melton’s Initial Touchdown Grab

Part 2 explains how the Packers stressed the Vikings coverages with a particular pass idea called stick/flat, which resulted in Bo Melton’s first NFL touchdown.

The Green Bay Packers easily defeated the Minnesota Vikings 33-10 on Sunday night in Week 17, taking advantage of the Vikings’ several covering strategies by providing quarterback Jordan Love and the offense with easy answers.

Three touchdown passes were completed by Love: two to Jayden Reed and one to Bo Melton. Bo Melton, who was playing in his third game in the NFL, made his first touchdown reception.

The series of plays that resulted in his score in the right corner of the end zone resembled one that the Packers tested early in their game against the Chargers in week 11 in an attempt to identify a pattern.

During the game, LaFleur and the offensive staff conducted in-game scouting, which showed that when the defense rotated the safety coverage to that side, clamping down on the stick/flat side, it left the deep safety alone to play top down over the dagger side of the concept.

When the weak side safety bit on the stick route as the weak hook defender, they eventually found Christian Watson on the intermediate crossing route for a score.

Several stick/flat reps against Minnesota’s lone high coverages showed the Vikings using almost the same rotations. The Packers might be able to hit the crosser behind the safety rotation if they could contain them with a five- or six-man pressure.
