Detroit Lions signing Mike Evans in free agency is still an absolute pipe dream
Mike Evans is not likely to end up with the Detroit Lions, even if he is more freely available to sign anywhere these days.
Mike Evans is now leaning towards signing with a new team in free agency after failing to agree with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by the end of the day on Monday. Before the new league year begins on March 13, the Buccaneers may still be able to retain him, but according to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the two sides “remain far apart.”. The “deadline” on Monday has to do with a contract void that now charges Tampa Bay dead money.
In 2023, Evans recorded his tenth consecutive 1,000-yard campaign and equaled the league top with thirteen touchdowns. Many organisations will now be prepared to jump at the chance to offer him a contract since he is a big receiver who still succeeds in contested catch situations as much as he ever did.
The Detroit Lions don’t have many gaps on the offensive end of the ball going into free agency. If Jonah Jackson and/or Graham Glasgow depart, Guard could end up becoming one, but only time will tell. Some may argue that the offense’s potential would increase with a wide receiver, who would fill a hole that has to be filled in some fashion.

Since the autumn, there has been an allure to the prospect of Mike Evans signing a free-agent contract with the Lions. However, it didn’t feel realistic back then, and it doesn’t feel any better today. This summer, Amon-Ra St. Brown is expected to get a contract extension for $20–$25 million per year; however, the full effects of this deal on the salary cap won’t be seen until 2025.
Thanks to Tom Brady, Evans has a Super Bowl ring. His current stats indicate that he should be inducted into the Hall of Fame before he plays another down.
Will his desire for money influence where he signs? Given his lifetime earnings of $110.3 million, it is difficult to determine the financial factor. Since he is a native Texan, the Houston Texans are a great option for a landing location. One of his primary concerns appears to be the quarterback.
Perhaps at age 31, Evans would agree to a one-year contract at a reduced price with a competitor and voluntarily return to the market in March 2025. That’s the only way, and quite unlikely, that he ends up with the Lions. That also presumes that the Lions are more than just a “don’t rule anything out” kind of team, aware that they are unlikely to obtain him given the number of other teams that are considerably more in need of him.
