La Liga boss Javier Tebas has stated that he “doesn’t care” about Mason Greenwood’s past and wants the Manchester United forward to remain in Spain beyond this season.

Charges of attempted assault and rape were brought against 22-year-old Greenwood, however the case was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023. Later that summer, he went on loan to Getafe.

Tebas acknowledged the young player’s achievements this season during his remarks at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit. “As a player, he’s doing really well at Getafe, and I hope he keeps up his success and stays in Spanish football because that’s always beneficial for us,” he said.

“He’s simply another participant. He has a past, but it’s not one we can control. He wasn’t condemned because he was innocent. We are not fit to judge everything. We wouldn’t have any teams if we did that.

“It’s crucial to clarify that he is not guilty since I practise law. Here (in the UK), he was found not guilty. Should the Spanish case have been reopened? Do I understand the circumstances?

“Greenwood was not condemned, so I don’t care.”

Reports from The Sun have claimed La Liga giants Barcelona are interested in signing Greenwood at the end of the season. Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has indicated that a decision on Greenwood’s future will be made this summer, with Ineos now in control of football operations at Old Trafford.

Reports last year said United wanted to keep him after looking into it, but people didn’t like that idea. Ratcliffe knows they need to choose what to do when Greenwood comes back, but nothing is decided yet.

At the Ineos headquarters in Knightsbridge last week, Ratcliffe told reporters, “I can talk about the principle, I’m not going to talk about Mason.” “I am acquainted with it. Since there will be more problems in the future, the principle is the most crucial one.

“You’re working with young individuals who, although highly bright and wealthy, haven’t necessarily had the ideal upbringing, and who don’t always have the proper supervision in their lives.

“In order to address problems such as those, we must first ascertain the truth—that is, the actual facts, not the marketing spin. Next, we must decide fairly while keeping in mind the club’s principles. That is what we must do, and that is how we will do it.

Correct, we will make a choice. And we’ll find a way to excuse it.

“I’m limited to discussing the general framework for our approach. Does he fit the bill as a football player? Is he a decent man or not?
