Proposed Trade Sends Cowboys a Steelers $36.7 Million Playmaker

Diontae Johnson of the Pittsburgh Steelers is a wide receiver that the Dallas Cowboys could consider for their wide receiver room makeover in 2024. The Steelers are “open to listening to trade offers” for the playmaker, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

WR Diontae Johnson is a player that the Steelers are open to hearing trade offers for, according to Russini’s March 9, 2024 statement on X. “As general managers prepare for free agency, teams from all around the league are showing interest.”

What would Johnson require of the Cowboys in exchange? Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report compiled possible trade offers for Johnson. Dallas would offer Pittsburgh its third (No. 87) and seventh (No. 233) round picks in exchange for the receiver, according to the analyst’s trade proposal.

In a story published on March 9 under the headline “Top NFL Trade Packages for Diontae Johnson After Browns Deal for Jerry Jeudy,” Davenport explained, “While we may not know what exactly Jones meant [by all-in], we do know that the Cowboys have a potential need at wide receiver.” Michael Gallup’s 418 receiving yards and $13.85 million salary cost in 2024 make him a possible cap casualty. In his first season in Dallas, Brandin Cooks did not have the kind of impact the franchise had hoped for.

“Diontae Johnson didn’t have a particularly strong 2023 season. However, from 2020 to 2022, he exceeded 85 catches in three consecutive seasons, and in 2021, he surpassed 1,100 receiving yards. Given Dallas’ yearly budget concerns, it would require some work to get Johnson’s $15.8 million salary cost to fit on the team’s books, but extending the 27-year-old would take care of that problem, Davenport continued.
