Troy Stecher of the Arizona Coyotes is added as a depth defenseman by the Edmonton Oilers.
The Edmonton Oilers acquired defenseman Troy Stecher and a seventh-round pick in 2024 from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2027, continuing to bolster their roster ahead of Friday’s NHL trade deadline.
The Oilers had just one day earlier acquired two centermen, Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick, from the Anaheim Ducks in a three-team trade that included Edmonton’s 2024 first-round lottery pick.
“After the deal was announced on Wednesday, we’re going to keep working the phones until Friday and see if we can do anything else,” stated Oilers general manager Ken Holland. “I’m going to discuss a seasoned defenseman with teams. Depending on what is offered and how much it costs.
Cost will be taken into consideration, as I have invested some draft capital over the past three or four years. The six we have are ones that we enjoy. I believe that if we take action, someone who is a number seven will be brought in.
This year, Stecher, a 29-year-old Richmond, British Columbia native, has contributed four assists and one goal in 47 games as that seventh D-man.
In 487 career games with the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, and Vancouver Canucks, he recorded 19 goals, 89 assists, and 217 penalty minutes.
In terms of cost, the Oilers will bear the whole $1.1 million salary hit for Stecher, in contrast to the Ducks trade, which saw Anaheim and the Tampa Bay Lightning absorb a sizable chunk of Henrique’s and Carrick’s contracts.
