DONE DEAL: Cardinals Land Super Star Also Add Former Boston Red Sox Executive

Four months after getting let go by the Boston Red Sox, Chaim Bloom is set to join the St. Louis Cardinals’ front office in an advisory role to their President of Baseball Operations.

The St. Louis Cardinals have named Chaim Bloom as an Advisor to the President of Baseball Operations, the club announced Monday.

Bloom was the Chief Baseball Officer of the Boston Red Sox from 2019 to 2023, at which point the team let him go. After missing the playoffs in three of the last four years, the Red Sox replaced Bloom with Chicago Cubs executive Craig Breslow.

Before his time in Boston, Bloom spent 15 years with the Tampa Bay Rays. He eventually earned the Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations title down in St. Petersberg, standing as the franchise’s second-in-command.

John Mozeliak is currently the Cardinals’ President of Baseball Operations, while Mike Girsch is their Vice President and General Manager. The pair have been a part of St. Louis’ front office for 29 years and 18 years, respectively.

That consistency at the top has helped the Cardinals stand out as one of the most successful modern franchises in the league, winning World Series titles in 2006 and 2011. After missing the playoffs in 11 of 12 seasons in the leadup to the 21st century, St. Louis has gone to the postseason 16 times in the last 24 years.

The Cardinals lost in the NL Wild Card round three years in a row from 2020 to 2022, though, and they are fresh off suffering their worst regular season record in nearly three decades in 2023.

Adding an analytics-driven advisor in Bloom could help St. Louis make the right moves around the margins moving forward, even if he drew plenty of ire from fans during his stint with the Red Sox.
