Lakers coach honors The Red-hot D’Angelo Russell with the ‘green room’

Some NBA shooters get the “green light” to continue jacking up shots. Darvin Ham, the coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, has given D’Angelo Russell the ‘green room’.

Following Russell’s 27-point effort against the Hawks on Monday night, Ham let the guard to continue shooting without conscience.

“He’s hands down the best shooter on our team,” Ham stated about Russell. “I want him to be as aggressive from three-point range as possible. His three-point shooting ability is quite impressive. And we need everything.”

“He has a green room,” Ham explained. “This is not a green light. “A green room.”

Russell tied Nick Van Exel’s team record most threes in a season (183), making six of his ten on Monday. Russell reached the milestone in his 64th game, but Van Excel took 80 games. Russell is expected to make more than 200 three-pointers this season if he continues at his present rate.

When asked about Harvin’s “green room” remarks, Russell insisted that he had earned his coach’s trust.”I appreciate him trusting me to that extent,” Russell told reporters.

“Definitely feel like I earned something like that and it wasn’t given. So, to know that that’s something I put the work in to do and put the work and continue to do, it seems normal for me, humbly.”

Russell, a nine-year NBA veteran, is arguably having the best season of his career, averaging 18.1 points, 6.4 assists and three rebounds.

Although he previously averaged more points in places like Brooklyn and Golden State, Russell is shooting a career-high 42.4 percent from three this season — 14th best in the league. If not for his shooting, the Lakers would be way worse than 23rd in the league in three-pointers made per game.
