Arthur Maulet praises the team’s culture as the reason why he re-signed; was willing to take less to stay

Cornerback Arthur Maulet gave credit to the Ravens organization and culture for why he resigned.

Players, coaches, and staff have often pronounced the Baltimore Ravens’ culture to be among the greatest in the NFL. Last month, Head Coach John Harbaugh stated that Jadeveon Clowney’s agency informed him that this was the first time Clowney has finished the season on a high note. Now, cornerback Arthur Maulet says that sharing the culture was a driving element in why he didn’t want to leave the Ravens and was willing to sign for less to stay.

“I did not want to leave. “I didn’t want to go anywhere else,” Maulet remarked on the team’s podcast, “The Lounge.” “I had the most successful year of my career here. So, whatever we had to work out in terms of negotiations, I was willing to accept less or whatever it took to be here. I adore this crew. I adore my teammates. I adore the coaches. “It’s the most fun I’ve ever had on a team.”

Maulet has been a journeyman throughout his NFL career, having played for five different teams. But there is something unique about Baltimore. For Maulet, this is home. It’s the culture.

“I believe it’s simply the building, guy. I just think that everyone in this building speaks the same language. We all work hard. We all care for one another. It is a brotherhood. We are willing to have unpleasant conversations if necessary. We don’t harbor any grudges against each other. We can motivate one another by making the plays that we do. We are not envious of other guys making plays. We are happy for them. We are celebrating with them. Just everything. Just the camaraderie. I was messing with a couple of men when I noticed the cooks working out. ‘Everybody works out here!’ I say. So I was like, “We all speak the same language.”

Maulet signed with the Ravens last season on a one-year, $1.08 million deal with $220k guaranteed. That guaranteed money meant everything to Maulet, who was denied guaranteed money in his contract negotiations with the Steelers, ultimately leading to the two parting ways. He hasn’t forgotten the Steelers’ lack of respect in doing so and applauded the Ravens last year for giving him such a deal.

“I was coming from Pittsburgh, and they didn’t give me anything guaranteed in my second-year contract. But when I joined with Baltimore, you guys did,” Maulet explained. “And I just felt like it [was] just the ultimate respect because I had put in my blood, sweat, and tears with [the Steelers], and I played hurt and done all these things, and they still didn’t want to give me guaranteed money. But you turned on the footage this past year before signing me, and you still offered me some guaranteed [money], but I didn’t play for you.”

Maulet re-signed a two-year contract with the Ravens on March 22. The actual numbers have not been revealed, but it appears like Maulet’s deal will benefit Baltimore while also providing him with assurances that other teams may not have been able to offer.
